Trust Indian Railways to come up with this.
February 11, 2007
I wanted to post this last year when i had been to Kumbakonam but i forgot about it once i got back. This picture was taken in one of the Jan Shatabdi day trains.

I was really surprised to see this. This set of instructions would seem to informative when everything’s hunky-dory. However, in case of an accident or an emergency, people tend to panic and no one has the time or the inclination to follow these instructions meticulously one after the other. And pray tell me, which one is the Tower Bolt?
Why cant we have instructions with pictures or have a simpler mechanism altogether? It would definitely save lives in the event of an accident where the doors get jammed.
Have you seen instructions like these elsewhere?

Those instructions should have instead read:
“In case of emergency, break whatever you can and get the hell out!”
I agree we should have a simpler mechanism of getting out when the doors are jammed. I’ve stared and stared at those emergency windows and I still have absolutely no idea how to operate them. And I wonder why they have jus 1-2 of those life-saving windows in each compartment. During an emergency, a stampede would kill more lives before anything else does.
Btw, if you figure out what the ‘tower bolt’ is, please let me know.

LOL.
Infact, that instruction makes a lot of sense.
I completely agree with you when you think why we only have 2 emergency exits per compartment. It is probably because no one even tried opening the existing ones.
Will let you know about the tower bolt

First of, I’m glad IR took the trouble to actually paste a notice. Secondly, only IR could come up with something like this!
And hey, when half the population can’t even read English, where is the Hindi version of this?

If the English version speaks volumes about IR, I can’t even think of what might happen if they translate this to Hindi.
